چکیده

Performance of human subjects in a wide variety of early visual processing tasks improves with practice. HyperBF networks (Poggio and Girosi, 1990) constitute a mathematically well-founded framework for understanding such improvement in performance, or perceptual learning, in the class of tasks known as visual hyperacuity. The present article concentrates on two issues raised by the recent psychophysical and computational ndings reported in (Poggio et al., 1992b; Fahle and Edelman, 1992). First, we develop a biologically plausible extension of the HyperBF model that takes into account basic features of the functional architecture of early vision. Second , we explore various learning modes that can coexist within the HyperBF framework and focus on two unsupervised learning rules which may be involved in hyperacuity learning. Finally , we report results of psychophysical experiments that are consistent with the hypothesis that activity-dependent presynaptic ampliication may be involved in perceptual learning in hyperacuity.

Fast perceptual learning in hyperacuity

We investigated fast improvement of visual performance in several hyperacuity tasks such as vernier acuity and stereoscopic depth perception in almost 100 observers. Results indicate that the fast phase of perceptual learning, occurring within less than 1 hr of training, is specific for the visual field position and for the particular hyperacuity task, but is only partly specific for the eye tr...

Specificity of learning curvature, orientation, and vernier discriminations

Training significantly improves the performance of many perceptual tasks. Different visual tasks share some "front-end" neuronal mechanisms but rely (partly) on different neuronal mechanisms for further analysis. Perceptual learning might occur on the early common levels of visual information processing or else on the later, more specialized levels. Eighteen observers trained in three visual hy...

Selectivity of the evoked potential for vernier offset.

Hyperacuity thresholds of a few arc seconds can be achieved psychophysically for a variety of spatial localization tasks. The present experiments show that evoked potentials can be elicited in response to the introduction of vernier offsets, but not by the introduction of other cues to hyperacuity such as bisection or relative pattern motion, although each of these cues is equally salient psych...

Fast perceptual learning in visual hyperacuity.

In many different spatial discrimination tasks, such as in determining the sign of the offset in a vernier stimulus, the human visual system exhibits hyperacuity by evaluating spatial relations with the precision of a fraction of a photoreceptor's diameter. It is proposed that this impressive performance depends in part on a fast learning process that uses relatively few examples and that occur...

The resistance of selected hyperacuity configurations to retinal image degradation.

Traditional visual acuity is based on resolution of stimulus features, whereas hyperacuity (ie, vernier acuity) is based on relative localization of stimulus features. Since resolution acuity is influenced severely by optical degradation, it is often not a suitable measure of the status of the retinal/neural visual system in conditions of optical degradation. In the present study, the authors i...
